Menstrual Pain Is Not Normal

Regular price $19.00

“I was a woman, I was menstruating, and the pain was part of it. It was all ‘normal.’ It wasn’t.”

“Menstrual Pain Is Not Normal – Endometriosis: the unknown disease affecting 1 in 10 women,” by Catarina Maia, is a book that challenges the normalization of menstrual pain.

Based on the latest scientific evidence and featuring testimonies from doctors and specialists, the author gathers in this book all the information she wishes she had access to, with clear and useful insights about what endometriosis is, its symptoms, where and how to seek help, and the treatments available to face the disease.

Synopsis:
For many years, Catarina Maia suffered from agonizing menstrual pain. It was as if, every month, a magic wand was working inside her body, mercilessly. She continuously sought help. Continuously, doctors dismissed her: she was a woman, menstruating, and the pain was part of it. It was all "normal."

It wasn’t. Nine years after her first period, Catarina was diagnosed with endometriosis, a little-known and hard-to-diagnose condition that affects one in ten people who menstruate. Determined to raise awareness about the disease, she created the page “O Meu Útero,” a space for sharing about endometriosis and fighting the normalization of menstrual pain.

Based on the most current scientific evidence, and using testimonies from doctors and specialists, the author now gathers in this book all the information she wishes she had had access to, with useful and clear notions about what endometriosis is and its symptoms, how and where to seek help, and the treatments to face the disease.

About the author:
Born and raised in Lisbon, she graduated in Social and Cultural Communication, specializing in Journalism, from the Portuguese Catholic University, and holds a master’s degree in Communication Sciences from the same institution. In 2017, she created the blog and Instagram page “O Meu Útero,” where she develops awareness work about endometriosis, repeating that “menstrual pain is not normal.” Under this motto, she regularly shares testimonies and experiences of women dealing with endometriosis and its consequences. A freelancer in content creation and social media management, she independently published in 2020 Ilustrário do Amor Próprio, a work that gathers 69 expressions of female masturbation illustrated by 69 artists in Portugal. In 2022, despite endometriosis, she embraced one of the most ambitious projects of her life: motherhood.
